Afro Beat!

The endless beat from Nigeria combining Yoruba, jazz, funk and highlife. Music that even allows dancing challenged individuals a chance to move and groove. It can be heard on CKCU every Sunday on This Island Earth and on occasion on other CKCU programs. Turn it up and leave it on!

It begins and ends with the wonderful Fela Kuti. Combining politics, showmanship and musician ship. There are few who could stand taller, play longer or groove better.

Tony Allen learned the trade drumming for Fela and has continued to push the boundaries.

Sonny Okosun would have some success in North America. His songs were on the soundtracks for: "Sun City" and "Something Wild".

Keeping the beat going in Nigeria is Funsho Ogundipe

Finally one of the leading Afrobeat bands of today is Antibalas. I have been lucky enough to see them live several times. It is a show that is not to be missed!
