R.I.P. Roberto Miranda

We have lost part of the heart and soul of CKCU. Roberto Miranda, long-time host of "Punto De Encuentro" has passed away. It was such a pleasure to know him. The warmth of his handshake would stay with you for hours. A kind gentle soul, he did so much to help so many. Every time he came to the station to pre-record an interview for his Wednesday night show, he made us all feel so special. What a wonderful man.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

MIRANDA CALDERON, Eduardo Roberto Born on January 21, 1955 in Guatemala, and died peacefully at home in Ottawa on February 17, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. Roberto came to Canada in 1993, a refugee from political persecution in Guatemala. His brother Willy had been killed by the Guatemalan dictatorship. Roberto's profound love of life enabled him to turn his suffering and that of his family into a life-long engagement with social justice. He was a union leader in Guatemala and a dedicated member of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. He was a born teacher-starting with children in Guatemala and ending with Spanish classes at Health Canada. Everyone who met Roberto learned some Spanish-his enthusiasm was infectious. Together with some of his students, with his union, and with many friends, he founded Education in Action, an organisation that works with the Campesino Committee of the Highlands in Guatemala to build houses for impoverished campesinos. Roberto's love of life and abundant generosity of spirit touched everyone he met-whether he was playing soccer, shopping at garage sales, organizing events for fair trade Cafe Justicia, or laughing with friends and with his beloved wife Yolanda and children, Danny and Florecita. He will be profoundly missed by family and friends all over the world. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 585 Somerset St. W. (centretown) on Saturday from 7 to 9pm. Funeral to St. Joseph's Church on Sunday at 2pm. In memoriam donations to Education in Action ( education-in-action.squarespace.com ) Hasta siempre, companero! www.kellyfh.ca
